Sittwe

Sittwe(Akyab) is the capital of Rakhine. It was founded in 1826 by the English General Morrisson, who moved his troops from Mrauk-U to the Kaladan River mouth to escape the inland humidity during the First Anglo-Burmese War. A seemingly endless stretch of beach north of the city, is a minor attraction. Sittwe's main importance lies in the fact that it is the gateway to the archaeological site of Mrauk U, 15th century ancient city of Rakhine Khingdom known for its old temples with wall paintings of Indian cultural influence. The boad trip from Sittwe to Mrauk U affords and insight into life on the river and the surrounding countryside.
