 Myitkyina
The capital town of Kachin State, 144 m above sea level. It was
levelled during the Second World war, when some of the fiercest
fighting between the Allies and the Japanese took place, and the
city changed hands several times. Today, an old, overgrown Allied
landing strip is still recongnizeable at the city limits – place of
pilgrimage for the few surviviing British "Marauders"and "Chindits".
Buddhist Temple and Chinese joss-stick houses cater for their
different religious needs. Due to the proximity of the jade mines,
there is an influx of Chinese money that helps to modernize the
