Mrauk
U
The wonders of the old city of Mrauk-U in Rakhine are also notable
because they are from a period between the Bagan and the Konboung
Dynasties of mainland Myanmar and they bridge two important periods
of Myanmar history. The designs of the religious buildings that
remain in Mrauk-U today are of a distinct architectural style Mrauk-U
was founded by King Min Saw Mon in the year A.D. 1430, and it was
the capital of Rakhine for 355 years until A.D. 1785 when the
Rakhine Kingdom came to an end. Built in a strong, strategic
location surrounded by mountains and hills, 45 miles upstream on a
tributary of the Kaladan River, it provided a safe haven for a
thriving prosperous kingdom. The Portuguese and other Europeans were
given a separate quarter, about half a mile west of the Palace Site.
The place is called Daingripet. The old church built by Father
Manrique, is now in ruins. It is near the Daigri tank built by Khing
Ba Saw Phyu (1459-1482). Rakhine has other historical sites which
proceed Mrauk-U; at Vesali, only 6 miles to the north and at
Launggret a little further away, both of which are accessible by
car. |
