 Monywa
Situated some 136 km west of Mandalay, Monywa is the commercial
centre of the Chindwin Valley. One of the most famous places is the
Thanboddhay Temple which resembles Indonesia's Borobudur because of
similarities in its architectural design, Bodhi-ta-htaung (one
thousand Bo trees) and Kyaukka village, known for its own style of
lacquer ware. It is the gateway for excursions to the cave temples
of Po Win Taung, situated across the river and reached by ferry. The
caves are famous for their Buddha statues, mural paintings and wood
carvings. There are supposed to have been over 400,000 Buddha images
carved out in the caves.
