Mawlamyine
Mawlamyine
is the capital of Mon state, sutiate at the mouth of Thanlwin
river(Salween River). It is accessible by road and rail from Yangon.
"By the Old Moulmein Pagoda": About 70 kilometres south of Thaton is
Mawlamyine, the third largest city in Myanmar. It was British
Burma's administrative centre between 1827 and 1852, but it is best
known today from Kipling's verse: "By the old Moulmein Pagoda,
looking lazy at the sea". Many old colonial buildings still remain
alone the quite streets. Several fine Pagodas and monasteries up in
the hills above Mawlamyine give you the perfect views of the city
and its harbor. The Caves of Kawgoon and Payon, famous for its
countless Buddha images, stalagmites and stalactites are near the
city. |
