Lampi
Marine National Park
The
distance of Lampi from Myeik is about 90 nautical miles southwest;
from Bokpyin iti s about 30 miles west and from Kawthaung about 60
miles northwest. It is easil accessible by ship. There are no
airstrips, but helicopters can be employed.
Lampi was officially designated as a Marine National Park on the
27th of the February , 1996. The Moscos group of islands of the
Maungmagan beach in Dawei District had been designed as a Wildlife
Sanctuary since 1924. But Lampi had been chosen to be the first
Marine National Park, because the coral reefs in and around the Park
area were the most diverse and formed the largest colony in
Myanmar's seas. The forests that grow on the island are also
pristine and diverse. An experienced foriegn traveller to Lampi
remarked that "On Lampi, it is possible to explore mangrove forests,
dune forests, evergreen forests and rainforests, much of it in
relatively pristine primary condition. There are probably only a
handful of locations in the world where it is possible to explore
four ecosystems all within a five kilometre walk.
The main island and the surrounding groups of islands have expansive
beaches of high quality sand and offshore corals, making it worthy
of being designated as a nature reserve and also of being developed
as a tourist attraction. |
