Kyaikhtiyo
(Golden Rock)
This
mystical golden pagoda stands on a gilded boulder, precariously
perched on the edge of th ehill over 1100 m above sea level.
Kyaikhto, the town at the foot of the hill, and about 160 km from
Yangon. It is not only a popular tourist attraction but also an
important place of pilgrimage for al Buddhist. Three are many
legends about the Pagoda and the "nats" or "spirits". To reach the
top of the mountain, one can either make a 13km climb (which will
take around 7 hours or more) or ride on open trucks that take
passengers to a middle camp through a steep and winding road. From
there all visitors have to walk up the remaining 4 km on steep
tracks. An easy alternative for those who can't manage the way on
the foot is to sit on sedan chairs, carried by four porters to the
top. Once arrived at the pagoda, one can enjoy a spectacular view,
especially at sunrise and sunset. |
