Bago
Hanthawaddy
called Bago is the capital of Bago division and located on the
eastern bank of the Bago River in Lower Myanmar. Only about 80 km
from Yangon, Bago is one of the most interesting side trips. Bago
was founded in 573AD and during the Mon Dynasty period was a great
city and capital of Lower Myanmar. Most of the interesting places in
Bago are pagodas. These are:
Shwemawdaw Pagoda which is over 1000 years old and has suffered
earthquake damage in 1882, 1912, 1917 and 1930. Each time the pagoda
was repaired.
Hintha Gone Pagoda has good views over Bago from the roofed platform
on the hill top. According to legend, this was the one point rising
from the sea when the mythological birth known as the Hintha landed
here.
Shwetharlyaung Buddha image was originally build in 994AD. Measuring
55 metres and 16 metres high it is a good 5 metres longer than the
reclining Buddha at Wat Phu in Bangkok. This is reputed to be the
most life like of all of the reclining Buddhas as well as one of the
largest. A walk-way up to the platform is crowded with souvenir and
handicraft stall especially made from sandal and teak wood.
Kyaik Pun Buddha Image beside the highway four huge
Buddha images are erected. Each Image faces either North, South,
East or West. These structures are 30 metres high. |
